Some Scriptures for Helping Overcome the Fear of Death
I think overcoming the fear of death can be difficult as there is still so much mystery over what heaven will be like as we have never been there. And just what happens when we pass on from this current earth? There are many reassuring scriptures for helping in the overcoming the fear of death but here are just a few I wanted to share with you.
Like most things, to overcome the fear of death, it requires us to look at the scriptures. What do they teach us?
Let's start with the reminder that death from this earth isn't the end but like passing through a door from one place to another.
I love the scripture in Matthew 22:32 (NIV) where we are told that God says, "I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." This was long after these men had passed away from this earth. He is not the God of the dead but of the living.
Another favorite, is Romans 8:35, 37-38 (NIV). "Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or the sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus."
Or how about Psalm 23:4 (NIV) which comforts us in our effort to overcome the fear of death. "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
God is with us. Our beginning, our reason for even existing is because God created us to have fellowship with Him. He wants to have a relationship with us. And though He is Holy and we fall short of His glory, He sent us Jesus to reconcile us to Him through Jesus and what He did at the cross. Why would He do all that if He didn't want to redeem us and be with us forever?
There are many scriptures that can reassure us to overcome the fear of death but I shall end this article with one last scripture that should provide encouragement. It tells us just how much our God thinks of us …
"How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them,
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I am awake, I am still with you. Psalm 139:17-18 (NIV)
I hope you found these scriptures encouraging and helpful to overcome the fear of death. God’s thoughts of you outnumber the sands of the seashore, He has got you in life and the passing from this current earth to heaven if you have accepted His gift of salvation.
